Any dog can attack or turn. I was about 6 when I was attacked by a German Shepard while its owner was holding my hand. My sons friend recently had his face filleted by a family freinds dog & they still have the dog. A friend of mines cat jumped on my back from a ledge when I walked into her house! Dog owners are to blame in 99% of these type of incidents.
I am fostering a pit bull & recently fostered a pit mix. Pit bulls are very loyal dogs, very smart, loving & they aim to please. As a rule, you should just be wary of any animal you don t know . I think a Pit would make a great service animal.

Pit bulls were bred to fight other dogs. They should not be human aggressive at all if they are bred properly.

I have met a few and have friends that own them. The ones I have personally encountered are really nice, friendly good dogs! One lives with small children and I have no problem taking my children there to visit. The dog is awesome.

Bad breeders, bad owners create bad dogs; makes no difference what the breed is.

Go back to englands history. They where farm dogs! They did not fight them intil 20yrs after the breed became a breed! I own 11 pits right now and they are not fixed and not saperaded only time they are is when one of my females are in heat! if i did Have a fight lines this could not happen. I can also take them to any bark park to play with dogs that are any size and age. So mabe you need to do some looking up . There is over 6 types of pit bulls. You need to dig deep and not stop when you find it you will finaly understand the real breed in witch i have and my family has been breeding. Just to let you know it can take you about 2 weeks of hard looking and a translater to help you. Its before AKC and UKC There lines where after the dog fighting started! people like you is what gives any breed a bad name. They look for a day and think they know everything! My family has been breed for over 100 yrs now. We know alot and helped the true breed stay a live.

i personally have 1 pure bred rednose and 2 pit/boxer mixes. i love all bully breeds. i guess i feel for them because they were bred to fight bulls and such large dangerous animals and it's no longer legal for them to do their job(thank god) so they have been taken in as family pets, but still have the genes to be fighters. they can be very dangerous dogs and also very protective of their family even if they weren't trained to be. i also have a 15mnth old son and i would trust my dogs to watch him over leaving him in daycare or with a sitter anyday. not that i would ever leave him alone with a dog of any kind, but just saying i trust my sons life with my dogs.my oldest male grew up with me at my moms before i got married and when i first had my son, my mom came to visit and i left her alone in the house with my son and my dog was very protective of my son not letting her near him. my dogs will lick to death any person that i let into my house. they have never been put in the situation where they needed to protect me, but i'm sure they will, not that i've trained them to. ok to make my point short, the breed is an amazing family dog, if trained correctly. i don't think someone with out knowledge of the breed should own them.

take a look at the post in "General Chat Forum" about Pit Bulls being Service Animals. What do you think about the discussion? I'm curious what other dog/animal lovers think...

Eddie is my first pit, and he's a mix. I personally think he's probably the smartest dog I've every had, and he's only been here for a week (7-8 months old). We are his 3rd owners, his first used abuse to train him, his second rescued him from the abuse knowing they couldn't keep him (disabled), and now we're his forever home. He never had any training before we got him, but in just 5 days he already learnt sit, lay, and heal (though I'm not real religious on teaching him). Today he figured out he can get out the cat door, we didn't even think he could. First thing he did was run to the front door and scratch on it to be let in! I think they'd make perfect service dogs as long as they're taught correctly and socialized.

I Personally, I'd love to hear in the news that these Pits that the "gangsters" are training to fight, would turn on their owners and tear them apart. I think that might slow down the back yard breeding and raising these dogs for fighting. What do you think? [/color]Shocked

This is exactly why my mom thinks that ALL pits will turn on their owners. I've told her, and my dad's told her too, that most likely those dogs have been taught to fight or have been abused alot! But she won't listen that a well taken care of pit can be one of the best family dogs. Ours even plays chase with our rabbit but NEVER opens his mouth while playing with her. The rabbit runs all around the house jumping up and twisting her body while kicking. It's really cute.

My personal problem with these breeds is with the people that I see them with. Usally 20'ish young adults. What happens when one of these animals attacks (and they do)? Who pays for the hospital bills (if you actually survive)? Maybe instead of "banning" these animals the law should require you to obtain liability insurance for the animal. Infact, for you that own one of these animals check your current homeowners policy and you may be surprised to find out certain breeds are not covered. If your dog attacks someone (even on accident) you will be held liable. Kiss the next 20 years of your financial life good-bye.

I love all dogs. I'm just not willing to take a risk with a large breed like the pitbull.

Fubitz has a good point.... the "saggers" in their late teens/early 20's "wannabe gangtas" (as the kids say) are the worst influence that has come along in a long time associated with Pits. They think it's cool to have a dog that's got the reputation of being dangerous and a "fighter". I had a kid in my neighborhood that had a pit and wanted to get together with another pit across the neighborhood. Both were alpha females... Since the kids wouldn't understand or could care less about the "insurance" issues, I brought up the point that they were obviously wanting these dogs to FIGHT. When they said they'd have to see what happened, then I told them that even if they could care less about their dogs, then please figure out BEFORE they got into a fight which one of these kids was going to "jump in and break them up".

That put an end to their dreams of "fighting" their dogs. (And I also mentioned that the dogs would be taken away from them... )

hey now i'm 23 and have had pitbulls all my life and they are my babies. i currently own 3 1 purebred and 2 pit/boxer mixes, and as long as they are properly socialized with other animals they are fine meeting new dogs. just check out 2 of my babies on the couch with my cats. my cats i rescued as 3wk old kittens and my dogs took them in as a part of the family right away and would sleep next to their crate at night. and now they all sleep in my bed together. my cats groom my dogs and they LOVE it. and yes back to the topic i think that an adult pitbull would make a wonderful service animal, not so much a young one because they can be very hyper.

I have a friend with 4 or 5 pit bulls (lost track they just rescued a new one). I have NO FEAR of them, nor do I think they will attack me or attack my dogs when they come over to play. They are all wonderful beautiful dogs that are no different then any of mine. They are lovable, like to cuddle, give kisses, and insist on sitting on my lap.

They breed one of the females, after a lot or research, and picking the right male. The mom will even let me go in and pick up her babies WITH NO AGGRESSION or hesitation.

I hate the ignorant statements or the biased on that breed because of the careless owners.

Last night on the news here in ohio they had a postman who was attacked by a bully during one of his routes, people need to be more responsible is what he said & I agree, They showed the number of attacks on postmen so far this year but not the breeds of dogs that attacked.

I have a male pit bull and he is a great dog I love the breed. I would not trade him for the world. I have never came across a pit that was so called vicious. I plan to have he do pet therapy in hospitals and nursing homes he is so sweet and gentle. I would like to breed him he is NKC registered his ad is on this site if any one is interested his name is rebel and his ad title is American Pit Bull Terrier for stud. I hate all this bad vibe going around about this great breed.
