| take a look at the post in "General Chat Forum" about Pit Bulls being Service Animals. What do you think about the discussion? I'm curious what other dog/animal lovers think... |

I dont think there is anything wrong with a well bred pit.
They are people dogs and thats what they are bred for. Very loyal and loving towards people just not so good with other dogs. This is how people can train them to do what they do (dog fighting and so on) because they want to please so badly they will do anything asked of them.
When you meet a really nice pit they are wonderfull dogs.
When in the wrong hands it is a very dangerous dog, like any big dog is.
Pits are just the target for the "thugs" who think it makes them look tuff to have a dog like that, its a shame. |

| Yes they are really great dogs like most bullies like bumble said unfortunately the wrong owners are attracted to them so it is understandable why a family wouldnt adopt a pit because their history of the dog will make or break it. |

| I absolutely love the breed and would not want any other. Any dog can turn. But the pits do have a bad rep., because of the bad people that own them. The laws need to be harsher for these people that do fight them maybe then they'll think twice about fighting dogs if they knew what the penalty was. As far as them being work dogs I'm on the fence with that one. |

I read the that discusion on the pits. Pretty scary how people try to defend anilmals. LOVALAB hit it right on the head. Your labs love to jump into water. I have never seen a lab that didn't. It's instictual for them.
As far as the "fact" that good owners make for good pets is only somewhat true. Just as Sigfreid and Roy. Those very lovely puddy-tatt Bengal Tigers were kind loving animials 99.9999999% of the time. Guess what... It's still a tiger!
I don't dissagree that pitbulls or other breeds deemed to be dangerous are not loving intellegent animals. They are however protective (as most dogs are) and can cause sever damage to life and limb. Sure poodles bite too, but the chances of dying from a poodle bite are slim to none, unless of course you get a nasty infection
My personal problem with these breeds is with the people that I see them with. Usally 20'ish young adults. What happens when one of these animals attacks (and they do)? Who pays for the hospital bills (if you actually survive)? Maybe instead of "banning" these animals the law should require you to obtain liability insurance for the animal. Infact, for you that own one of these animals check your current homeowners policy and you may be surprised to find out certain breeds are not covered. If your dog attacks someone (even on accident) you will be held liable. Kiss the next 20 years of your financial life good-bye.
I love all dogs. I'm just not willing to take a risk with a large breed like the pitbull.
As far as service animals I think the police should have attack crows. Imagine you (the bad-guy) and your hostage in the middle of the street. You ain't given' up and they ain't takin' you alive. Then all of a sudden... 30 black crows come swooping down at you... AHHHH!.
All is well that ends well. |

| I agree totally, but my experiecne with Pit Bulls is mixed, my mother in law has 4 pits and they are supposidly nice family pets and they have raised them as such and the male has tried to bite my kids a few times and has also turned on my husband after appearing to be harmless. She also admits to the dogs being unpredictable with other animals and very vicious at times. I have also met a few nice ones but honestly I wouldn't trust them with my kids or own one with kids at home-just an honest answer. |

Just to let you know the first dog used in bite work and steel is the best is a standed and king size poodle!
I have 4 kids ranging from 5 to 15 the oldest being in a wheel chair with little movement ability. I have been around them all my life and not one has truned or thaught of biting anyone. |

I forgot about the tiger thing they have proved that they where treating them bad on top of that they lived in a cage that was not big enough for one never two.
Do you blame them? Plus there is a HUGE difference between a tiger and a dog.
Dogs have been changed by humans and tigers have not.

(Hi Pawswithpower!) I believe that it's important to know that you have carried on a breed that has been with your family for a number of years. In this way you can monitor the breeding and temperment that you are looking for OR tying to avoid. |
