WE talk so much about responsible breeders on hear and this is good. but i was wondering is it being responsible to give your puppies there shots with out having any experience in the veterinarian field. And selling puppies with out health examination. and sould a dog breeder be able to show proof of yearly examination on there adult dog and have them on there heart worm med as due. I at least thing they sould do these few thing and more of course. WHAT DO YOU THINK

There is nothing wrong with vaccinating yourself,I do and so do everyone I know, but all puppies are vet checked before they leave and then if customers have questions they can call my vet.I also can microchip.I personally dont do tails but lots of breeders do.We as breeders can only do so much,as long as we vaccinate and take care of the puppies, some responsibility is up to the buyer also to protect their puppy.Pet smart is a really bad place to pick up Parvo, look how many dogs are in and out then they have shelters come there. We only can do so much.Puppies are NOT immune of getting sick, just as humans aren't either. We give alot of care sheets for Parvo,Hypoglycemia and just puppy care to help as much as possible along with my card so buyers can always call or email if they have questions.

I think giving vaccinations your self is just fine so long as you have been trained properly and as long as the puppies still see a vet to get a health check just as children do.
I personally like to just take them to the vet so they get in a couple health checks incase something was missed the first time around.
I think you should be able to provide all the health records on your adults as well.

Worming is also important especially if your puppies are going into homes where their are children. Round worms can cause a child to go blind, and , many pediatricians don't stress this to parents.

WOW Mlyn, I had no idea roundworms could cause blindness in children.

My puppies all are kept up to date on their shots but I remember growing up as a kid and none of our dogs ever had any shots. I'm sure lots of folks didn't we weren't unique. Just lucky I guess.

I either get my vaccines online or go to my vet, they are kept in the fridge.I get the live vaccines which are better, some of the vaccines aren't live you need to check. We do safegaurd as far as worming because it takes care of most worms. We keep all adults wormed and vaccinated too.We use the pills for heartworms.

As long as the dog is started on heartworm prevention at an early age before any microfilaria have had a chance to mature into adults you should not have to test for heartworms. I am also sure that is a rule that is per your vets request. The heartworm medecine is found in several forms for a variety of species and is available over the counter most of the time. There are a few brands that the manufacturer requires to be sold only through a vet so the purchaser understands the risks involved if the animals heartworm history is unknown. I really do not know of any state that has restrictions on the use of ivermectin. There are a few other drugs that treat heartworms but ivermectin is the most referred to.

MBF : I get in trouble on here all the time for my humor . So if you think I'm cool YEA ! I'm not a breeder of dogs just a 3 yorkie mom and 2 parrot mom . Used to be a parrot breeder but my lungs aren't good enough for that stuff any longer.

I give lots of good opinions though Smile

I'm new to this site, I've been breeding champion bred labs for 6 years now and I have a litter of 10 week old pups right now (only 2 left) I give all the vaccinations myself, I keep them in my fridge and I buy the live stuff from drs fosters and smith online, I'm only 25 years old but I come from a long line of dog breeders and as far as I'm concerned you don't have to be Albert Einstein to administer a shot to a puppy. Now as for the heartworm I always give my dogs heartguard plus and I don't know a vet in town that will give it to me without testing the dog first.
by the way nice to meet you all.

Interceptor is different than ivermectin but you shouldnt have anything to worry about as long as the dog is started as soon as he/she is old enough to start taking the monthly dose and you should never have a problem with heartworms. I would see where the company wouldnt stand behind it unless the dog was tested clean prior to being treated for the sake of liability but even if you did test clean before hand they probably still wouldnt stand behind their product they would claim bad handling or misuse and never be able to prove it beyond reasonable doubt that you did something wrong. I believe interceptor is supposed to only be available from licensed vets but the mail order places actual have a vet on staff so they can say a vet Ok'd it but you probably never talked to him or her about it. It is probably just the company who regulates its use on negative tested animals only but I know that many vets and probably my own would take my word for it if I told him I had kept the dog on heartworm prevention from an early age and go ahead and give it to me without a heartworm test. I am confident all my dogs are OK, they have all been treated regularly from an early age. I'm just saying its not usually a law of the government but rules put forth by the companies who make it to cover their butts and not get sued. If you dont test, dog tests positive for heartworms 4 months down the road, its your problem not theirs. If you did test clear and the dog tested positive 4 months later then it should be there problem but more than likley they wouldnt own up to it, i really dont trust the drug companies "guarantees" your SOL no matter what happens.
