How many people out there like appleheads opposed to Deer head chihuahuas and vice versa??
I'm just curious cause It seems if I look back the dogs that are Iconic for the breed, taco bell dog and ones from various movies have the deer head. I wonder if it is a more widely loved than appledomes. If so do any of you see the possiblity of AKC having two types of Chihuahuas being accepted for show. Like with bull terriers the white and colored versions are shown separatly but either can come from a bully's litter this can be applied to Chis.
Whats everyone elses opinions?? |

I like the "Correct" Chihuahua.
AKC Breed Standard :
| Quote: |
Head
A well rounded "apple dome" skull, with or without molera. Expression - Saucy. Eyes - Full, but not protruding, balanced, set well apart-luminous dark or luminous ruby. (Light eyes in blond or white-colored dogs permissible.) Ears - Large, erect type ears, held more upright when alert, but flaring to the sides at a 45 degree angle when in repose, giving breadth between the ears. Muzzle - Moderately short, slightly pointed. Cheeks and jaws lean. Nose - Self-colored in blond types, or black. In moles, blues, and chocolates, they are self-colored. In blond types, pink nose permissible. Bite - Level or scissors. Overshot or undershot bite, or any distortion of the bite or jaw, should be penalized as a serious fault. Disqualifications - Broken down or cropped ears. |

| From my understanding the AKC Chi standard is changed rather frequently, at least more so than most other breeds. The origional decision between deer and apple heads was just a matter of preference, kind of feel sorry for those who had been breeding deer heads before the club set the standard however long ago that was. In a way that kind of made all their dogs seem poor quality when perhaps they had been breeding to achieve a certain look all along and now its all considered obsolete. I doubt AKC will ever have another variety as the breed club would have to make a motion to change it and I am sure the big wigs of the club are probably dead set against it since most of them are already breeding the show type applehead. Also if they really wanted another variety they probably would have decided that back when the breed was recognized since they actually had to vote on it in the beginning. |

The breed standard was chosen in the early 1900's I personally prefer the correct chihuahua. I wish people would stop breeding the "deer" version or at least stop calling them chihuahuas because when a "deer" is bred with a correct chihuahua it turns into quite an akward dog. The standard is frequently changed but not major changes, it things such as allowing the dew claw to be removed or changing/adding certain words to the description
My rescue chi is a "deer" girl and I love her to death but she is not even close to the AKC standard she looks like like a min pin mix or something!
Seiberts its hard to tell in your picture, "Deer" chihuahuas have very long legs, a longer snout and a less rounded "apple" forehead and mine even has a tail that curls over her back instead of just arching over it. |

| Since we are on the topic of Chi's I just came across an ad for half French Bulldog half Chihuahua, and they want $1500 for them. I think they just had nothing else better to do than see what would happen. |

| I personally like both kinds. I think it's unfortunate that there are the two kinds cause one is looked down upon compared to the correct ones. If some one fancies it, its too bad. In a way it may benefit AKC. |

| I think if people are going to continue to breed them they should be considered a diff. Breed because they are so far from the akc standard of a chihuahua |

i did not vote i love both and i have both .if I'm not badly mistaken the original chihuahua was a deer head. akc has a problem trying to chance a few breeds to suit there self. i was a akc breeder no more just for this reason and that why other kennel clubs are gain on them mainly ckc i know some akc breeders will disagree and that fine but pick a place to look for a puppy any ad count ckc and akc i don't agree with every thing ckc does . They need to tighten up on some of there breeders but as of now they don't try to change original breed, and i have had chihuahua in my home over 26 years

Their were both types of chihuahuas they were accepted by akc in 1904 (I think) and a few years later the standard was chosen.
My issue with the deer chihuahua is when they are bred with a correct chihuahua they look akward and weird I think the two shouldnt be mixed because it causes them to look like mix breed dogs.
I own both types but I only breed to AKC standard. |

I think it would be cool if they accepted the deer head even if it was considered to be a different breed. One example is the giant snuazers (sorry i know i spelled it wrong) and the standards. They say all the time they are COMPLEATLY different breeds. So it can be done. I don't think AKC would bite that bullet. They are too set in their ways.
Just a note for everyone: I did try to put in the poll the option for both but it did not come up. I did intend to have that option sorry =) |
