|
|
| I recently posted my ad for my lab pups which were born on 7-18-08. Well I have a man who is interested in buying one for his daughter and we have talked via e-mail several times. Well he asked me if he could bring his daughter over one day to see the pups, and I told him I didn't have a problem with them coming to see the pups. Well he has also stated that he would like to get the pup around 7 weeks of age ( 1 week earlier than I planned on releasing them), because he needs it at that time for its training. My question here is should I be cautious about them coming to see the pups? I don't want my litter to be infected with parvo. And also whats your take on him wanting the pup a wek earlier than I have stated in my ad, for training purposes. I mean it could be a legit reasoning, like training to hunt or something, but I'd like to have more input rather than go on my speculations. Thanks for all advice given. |

FIRST of all. Never let a man come to your home without your husband/boyfriend/brother are there . Stick to your guns and sell when you know it's right. One week isn't going to make the puppy an Einstein .
Just my advice

Yeah I won't let him come to my house with just my wife and son here. It just was odd to me and he insisted that its really important to him that he gets the dog at that time. Here's the exact message he sent to my email.
Donnie,
Is there any way i can bring my daughter over to see the puppies. Also, i need to get the dog on the 5th or 6th for training purposes, we have a female "momma" dog here, its kinda important that i get the dog on the 49th or 50th day.
Thanks

| I think what it learns from its littermates in that time frame would be more important than learning anything else, social order is what they are supposed to be learning in order to become better learners after they go to new homes. Littermates teach each other alot about how to figure things out and learn. Like MzRita said one week isnt going to make or break its master hunter title. |

That is what allot of "Field" breeders like to think . Ie : "7 weeks is better for inprinting" . Not all field breeders do this, more let their pups go at 8 to 9 weeks. IMHO, Ability is either there or not. You can force a dog to retrieve, but that is not the same as natural ability (which is what all Lab breeders should breed for, along with Correct Temperament, Conformation and the highest regards for Health). If the guy we dead set on getting a pup from you, he would respect your wishes to place your pups at 8 weeks. This is very important. Also, what does "Momma" dog mean ? Does he breed as well ?? Personally that would set off a red flag for me.
Anyhow, what I would do is ask him why it is so important for the pup to leave at 7 weeks and let him know that the extra week is very important for the pup to stay with his/her littermates and dam and that you will ONLY let your pups go at 8 weeks.. If he refuses, well I guess he'd go else where .. |

| There is NO way I would sell this man a pup. Something is wrong here. If he really "cared" about the puppy he wouldn't want to take it that early! |

Nobody NEEDS a puppy ever, you get one at the best time for you, but also the best time for the puppy, that is why people pick the right breeder, get on a waiting list, and wait years for the perfect puppy. I would make it very clear he needs to wait till 8 weeks.
I took sora from Terri's house at 6 and a half weeks of age, because terris stupid daughter brought home a stray dog that had kennel cough, the vets was closed, i drove to terris house, grabbed sora and took him home with me. I could not take muffin or calob because they may have already gotten it. She brought them all to the vets the next day to get the vaccine or whatever they get, But sora was already weaned, and he had no litter-mates, and i had school, i waited a week before i could bring him back to muffin, by that time he would not sleep or eat without me, i had turned into his mommy and he wanted me more than his own mother. He was never taught not to bite or nip, or when to calm down, so it was very hard to teach him that since muffin did not get the chance to. So i would highly suggest not taking them from mom until 8 weeks unless of an emergency like i had. |

| I had a friend that had pups and let someone come see them. That person came back and broke in when on one was there and took all pups. |
