Hello! New here (obviously)
Aside from this, I also gave Yahoo Answers a try late last night. How many young teens out there are up at 1130 asking about love, mostly guys, and sex?!!! And they are young!
Reading Trigger Point Therapy, because I am a therapist. |

Just curious what everyone out there is reading right now? I thought this might be a great way to let people discuss their favorite books, and maybe find some new ones to enjoy!
Right now I am currently reading Angels and Demons (literally just started) and I also have in the works Cosmic Connection by Carl Sagan and The Cell by Stephen King. A few of my favorite books are The Chrysallids (John Wyndham), Enders Game (Orson Scott Card), The Neverending Story (Michael Ende), Siddhartha (Hermann Hesse), Davinci Code (Dan Brown), The Alchemist (Paulo Coehlo), and Contact (Carl Sagan). I also love Shel Silverstein and anything by Dr. Seuss

I have found that I do not have as much time as I would like to read books. I sit down to read and 10 min into a good book and I fall asleep. I don't get alot of resting time. I was lucky enough on my last job to be able to listen to music or books. I joined Audible.com and got an iPod and download books (I now have a library of over 300 books). Not to sound like an ad but I was able to purchase 2 books on the $25 a month plan that I would not have been able to buy at a bookstore because they cost over $25 ea. Once I got 2 book that were $35 and $48 for my $25 monthly fee. I could buy additional books at a reduced price. I have had to quite the membership but I can still listen on line or download my books and purchase books (but not at the membership price).
My recommendations are: If you like Steven King you would probably like Dean Koontz. I also enjoy Michael Crichton and his style of writing. J. A. Jance is a good suspense/thriller writer that women would like. Anne McCaffrey is good at writing sci-fi series that women would like. I need to check my collection to see what else I think you might enjoy. I hope I am assuming correctly that Kelly is feminine.
I am going to Sanibel Island (FL) the end of next week for a rest and would love to have an inspirational recommendation that I can start watching a sunrise and possibly finish watching the sunset.
Thanks and have fun reading or listening! |

Let me admit up front that I went through the recommendations on this thread and found a lot of best selling authors like King, Brown, Jance et al. I would poke my own eyes out before I would suffer my way through the tedium these writers impart. javascript:emoticon(' ') Hey I'm just having fun, don't take me too seriously.
Anyway, I really like books that move along at a breakneck pace and leave many scattered bodies along the way. So, if you want more bullet holes in your reading, here are my favorites.
SCIENCE FICTION
Altered Carbon by Richard Morgan
The Skinner by Neal Asher
The Scar by China Meiville
Jennifer Government by Max Barry
CRIME
The Jack Reacher series by Lee Child
The Parker series by Richard Stark (but not the last 3, try his earlier stuff)
The Joe Kurtz series by Dan Simmons
BIZZARO (yes, Bizzaro is a real genre)
The Menstruating Mall by Carlton Mellick
I would like to know that I am not totally alone in my reading habits. I'm always looking for new "hard-boiled" noir and will greatly appreciate suggestions.

I had finished reading my second Mary Higgins Clark books, and man let me tell you, I love her writing. It is so easy to follow along and read, and her novels are so interesting. I already have a list of her books I want to read once I'm not completely loaded with school work.

Here is some info. on Robin Cook. If you love reading Mary Higgins Clark books..I think you might enjoy his books also!
Doctor and author Robin Cook is widely credited with introducing the word "medical" to the thriller genre, and twenty years after the publication of his breakthrough novel, Coma, he continues to dominate the category he created. Cook has successfully combined medical fact with fantasy to produce a succession of New York Times bestsellers, including Outbreak (1987), Mindbend (1988), Mutation (1989), Harmful Intent (1990), Vital Signs (1991), Blindsight (1992), Terminal (1993), Fatal Cure (1994), Acceptable Risk (1995), Contagion (1996), Chromosome 6 (1997) and Toxin (1998).
In each of his novels, Robin Cook strives to write about the issues at the forefront of current medical practice. To date, he has explored issues such as organ donation, genetic engineering, fertility treatment, in vitro fertilization, research funding, managed care, drug research, and organ transplantation. In VECTOR, Cook explores an issue seemingly ripped from today's headlines -- bioterrorism.
Cook says he chose to write thrillers because the form gives him "an opportunity to get the public interested in things about medicine they didn't seem to know about. I believe my books are actually teaching people."
Coma was made into a successful feature film, and Cook's novels have also been made into television productions. In December 1993, CBS-TV aired "Robin Cook's Harmful Intent"; in November 1994, NBC-TV aired "Robin Cook's Mortal Fear"; in May 1995, NBC-TV aired "Robin Cook's Virus," based on Outbreak; and in February 1996 NBC-TV aired "Robin Cook's Terminal." In addition to 1997's "Robin Cook's Invasion," NBC-TV has two other Cook novels in production.
Robin Cook is a graduate of Columbia University Medical School and finished his postgraduate medical training at Harvard. He is currently on leave from the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary. He divides his time between homes in Boston and Florida. |
