have you tried looking in your local newspapers, or flyers posted for any sort of group that is of interest to you?
Finding a group or something you enjoy doing and being with like minded people is certainly a good first step!

i know you know about myspace, blackplanet or facebook? now of days every one from unborn to people that passed away have one of these personal pages made and you can find all kind of people you can talk to them as long as you want until you feel safe to meet up, you would already know how they look and everything, you can talk to them over the phone just get to know them and meet up in a public place first and dont ever go anywhere private in the first few meets of course no matter how much trust you have built up there are still some crazy people out here
