Fibromyalgia feels like a severe case of the flu but it does not go away in 24 hours, 48 hours or even 48 days and every muscle in the body aches. A person who has fibromyalgia doesn’t have the energy to lift the head, much less do the dishes, drive to work or walk up a flight of stairs. The symptoms of fibromyalgia are similar to ordinary illness such as the flu.

Recent medical studies have confirmed fibromyalgia is real even some doctors often write about fibromyalgia as hypochondria or an active imagination. 3 to 6 percent of the population of the U.S. has fibromyalgia. 80 to 90 percent of those with fibromyalgia are women. The highest incidence occurs among women 20 to 40 years of age.

Fibromyalgia is referred as a syndrome of signs and symptoms that characterize it such as soft tissue tenderness, sleep disturbances, general fatigue, aches, pain and stiffness in the back, neck, hands and other parts of the body. Fibromyalgia is also characterized as a chronic, arthritis-related condition. Because the symptoms are common in other conditions diagnosing fibromyalgia is confusing for those in the medical profession.

Symptoms of fibromyalgia may include: chronic headaches, fatigue, cognitive or memory impairment, jaw pain, chemicals sensitivities, lighteadedness, menstrual cramping, irritable bowel syndrome, disturbed sleep, muscle pain, morning stiffness, numbness and tingling sensations and dizziness. Fibromyalgia is influenced by gender, age, sleep disorders and genetic disposition. Other symptoms of fibromyalgia are: pain in the muscles, ligaments and tendons.

Some experts suspect fibromyalgia being caused by viral or bacterial infection, an autonomic nervous system dysfunction, upper spinal cord injury, emotional stress or trauma, immune or endocrine system dysfunction or chronic sleep disorders. Because resemble a post-viral state fibromyalgia is the same as chronic fatigue syndrome. Some of the old names used for fibromyalgia are: fibrositis, chronic psychogenic rheumatism and muscle pain syndrome.

In 1990, the American College of Rheumatology put the term fibromyalgia on the map by giving its official criteria for the diagnosis of fibromyalgia. A person is classified with fibromyalgia if he or she feels pain under pressure in at least 11 of 18 specific areas of the body. Patients with fibromyalgia must exhibit widespread pain on both sides of the body and above and below the waist for at least a three month duration of time.

Fibromyalgia feels similar to rheumatism but the two differ in two ways. Fibromyalgia affects muscles and their attachments to bones rather than arthritis of a joint. Rheumatism is associated with arthritis and related disorders of the muscles, bones and joints. Although fibromyalgia feel like a joint disease, it does not cause deformities of the joints. People with fibromyalgia do not feel the sympathy of friends, family members or their co-workers and bosses.

PostPosted: Wed Aug 20, 2008 6:05 am    Post subject: Fibromyalgia vs Addiction Reply with quote

My doctor and I have had many conversations about this very topic. I am so worried about the addiction factor that comes with taking pain meds on a regular basis over a long period of time. Both my primary care doc and the other two specialists I see told me that you cannot take the type of meds we need without becoming dependent on them to a point. This is how he explained to me the difference in being 'dependence' on meds for medical reasons verses outright addiction.

The medications we use to control our pain are given to us so that we can function and live life the way it is supposed to be (as much as possible with our conditions). When we take them in the doses prescribed , if they help the pain then it accomplishes the purpose of allowing us to participate in life. If I don't take my meds, I am almost completely incapacitated. During the course of time that we are taking these meds, of course our bodies come to rely on them for the relief we so desperately need, and yes...if you eliminate them completely you will suffer some withdrawl symptoms. Now having said that, and I'm going to quote 2 of my doctors here, "out and out addiction to these meds is a psycological need, not just the physical need." Both docs told me that those of us that use them as prescribed, just for the relief from pain are not addicts. Addicts, will take meds, even when they are not hurting, just because they have them, possibly they like the way it makes them feel and then when they really get to hurting, they have taken so many pills that it takes higher doses to manage their pain and they are constantly running out early, requesting larger amounts and even start 'doctor shopping' to get more and more.
On the other hand, those of us that take as prescribed and let one doctor manage all of our scripts will (as I said earlier) still become somewhat physically dependent on them for pain control but we won't end up with that proverbial "monkey on our back" as long as we are honest with our doctors and work closely with them to help us with our pain management. He also told me that if I woke up one morning and was miraculously cured, pain gone, etc. Yes I would have to be weaned off of the meds. Then he said ", don't worry, you are not 'HOOKED' on pain meds. They serve a very real need in your life and if we did have to wean you off of them it would be a very easy process."
One other thing I want to mention is that he told me that the nature of our illness is such that some days/weeks are much better than others and occasionally everyone has a flare that requires extra meditcation to keep the pain under control (as much as possible) so everyone needs an early refill once in a while and as long as you have only one doctor managing your meds for you, you shouldn't get yourself into an 'addict' situation.
I don't know about the rest of you but my doctor watches my pills like a hawk. He keeps very close tabs on my condition and pain levels to ensure I am as comfortable as possible but not in danger of becoming 'addicted' as I view it. I have to see him every 6-8 weeks.
Now I don't know if this helps you but I just had to let you know what my doctors had told me concerning my fears of being an addict. Also my three docs all consult with each other but only one prescribes my meds to ensure I don't get extra pills without his knowledge. This was done at my own request, it just makes it easier all the way around to make me feel a little more comfortable about the addiction issue.

Chronic Pain: Dealing Day-to-Day

Medical and technological advances have made pain more manageable today than ever before. However, in many instances pain goes untreated, undertreated or mistreated. Some people believe that they must live with their pain. Some fear that complaints will not be taken seriously or that adequate pain remedies are not available. Others are afraid to request pain medications for fear of becoming addicted, even though this seldom occurs when medications are used properly under a physician's supervision.

In addition, many doctors have had little training in pain care and may be unaware or not fully informed of treatments that can help to relieve pain. Some doctors may also have misconceptions about pain management, such as believing that pain medications are likely to cause addiction and therefore cannot be prescribed to patients who need them.

It is important to seek advice from a pain physician earlier in the course of your pain. You should not be embarrassed about your pain or afraid to voice your concerns out of fear of appearing weak or complaining. Pain that goes untreated may worsen other health problems, delay recovery and interfere with healing. Untreated pain worsens not only overall pain control, but also the your qualify of life. Therefore, it is important that you seek out proper care and not give up until you find an effective method of pain relief.

Those who wish to see an expert in pain management can ask their doctor to recommend a pain specialist. In some cases, you may find these experts at a local pain treatment center. These may be referred to by several names, including pain clinic, pain management center, pain unit or pain service. In some cases, these facilities are attached to a local hospital or medical center. In other cases, they are stand-alone facilities.

Sad Ahhh Dear Bubble, I am sorry to hear this. I know what you are going through and sometimes it helps to have a support group. Feel free to join this and have a look around, there is a lot of information. I also have a MSN support group but I don't think I can advertise it here. This is for information only, I sell nothing, I ask for nothing, I just offer support and health information. I am only promoting AWARENESS, and I hope you find relief soon. It's a relentless painful disease...
Wishing you low pain days...and don't dismiss your dx, there is help out there, you don't have to go through this alone..
